The granitebaypt.com website reported on November 4, 2008 that Christopher Ryan Helmer 16, succumbed to his injuries suffered on July 28, during a car crash. Helmer attended Woodcreek High School and played on the football team. Friends described Helmer as respectful, friendly and athletic.
Kelly Mayo who was Helmer’s junior varsity football coach said “He was a great kid who understood his role and worked hard to get better every day. He had some really neat tools. The kid could run and the kid could jump. He left us all way too soon.”
Principal of Woodcreek, Jess Borjon, stated that crisis counselors would be available to those who needed one. Helmer suffered his injuries shortly before midnight on July 28 when the 1992 Honda Accord he was riding in was broadsided. Helmer was sitting in the back seat when a 1995 full-size Chevy pickup struck the Accord. Behind the wheel of the Honda was a 17 year girl who suffered minor injuries alongside the 16 year old female passenger. Jose Luis Serrano-Dias was driving the pickup and also sustained minor injuries.
No driver has yet to be determined to be at fault by the authorities as the investigation is ongoing. All people involved were wearing their seatbelts and alcohol or drugs were ruled out as a cause for the car crash.
