According to news sources, the Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement agreement with Central Coast Nutraceuticals after the latter agreed to pay a $1.5 million fine for using false claims as well as unfair billing.
The company allegedly used false claims in its advertisements, including phony endorsements from Rachael Ray and Oprah Winfrey, while deceptively claiming that their Acai Pure product could result in rapid weight loss for consumers who use it. The company also reportedly made unauthorized bank charges to consumers that signed up for a free trial. The settlement agreement will refund consumers.
The company has not admitted to violating the law, as constituted by the settlement agreement signed between the parties.
