Less is More When it Comes to Crib Crowding

By Los Angeles Personal Injury Lawyer on October 22, 2011

The Food and Drug Administration has warned parents that products which claim to prevent of lower the change of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome are not backed by the FDA, according to recent news soureces.

The FDA has stated that the best thing parents can do to lower the occurrence of SIDS is to place the baby on his or her back while sleeping, and make sure the sleeping area is clear of anything else.

They are currently working to prevent product manufacturers from making claims that their products prevent SIDS. These include certain mattresses, crib bedding, pillows, baby monitors, crib tents, and infant positioners. The FDA has never approved a product that prevents SIDS, a condition in which an infants under one year of age dies without reason, and has requested that these medical claims are removed from the products.

A pediatric medical officer of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health stated that these products can actually cause fatalities rather than prevent them. The FDA has recorded 13 deaths in the past 13 years in relation with sleep positioners.

As a Los Angeles wrongful death attorney, I hope that you and your family abide by the recommendations put forth by the FDA. Always be careful about products that make medical claims without FDA backing. If you or someone you love has been injured by a defective product, I recommend you contact a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.

Recalled Drop-Side Cribs are a Threat to Babies

By Los Angeles Personal Injury Lawyer on September 29, 2011

A recall of drop-side cribs is being conducted by Shermag Inc. due to suffocation and strangulation hazards, according to recent news sources.

About 2,300 cribs in the United States and 800 in Canada are being recalled because the hardware of the cribs has been proven to break, which causes the drop side to detach from the rest of the crib, allowing for a gap between the rain and crib mattress. Small children can easily fit in the gap, trapping them and exposing them to risk of suffocation or strangulation. Children can also fall from the crib in this instance.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has had 21 reports of drop side failures. However, no injuries have been reported in relation to the failure.

Model numbers affected are 202647, 211047 and 272547. The cribs retailed for between $400 and $800 between September 2004 and December 2008 in The Land of Nod and baby specialty stores.
