Pet Owners Question Safety of Chicken Jerky Products

Numerous incidents of dogs falling ill or even dying after consuming chicken jerky treats from China has many calling for restrictions on the product.

It all began in 2007, when incidents began to come to the attention of lawmakers and regulatory agencies.  In March of that year, the FDA instituted a number of recalls on dog and cat food products that were found to contain ingredients contaminated with melamine.  Then in September of that year, the FDA issued warnings to pet owners about the possible safety hazards posed by chicken jerky treats.

Now, history seems to be repeating itself as the FDA issues another warning about the same issue.  Reports of incidents dropped for two years, but they’re currently on the rise again.  The FDA has asked pet owners to keep a close eye on their pets and watch for such things as decreased appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea.

From the time that the FDA began receiving reports, numerous tests have been run on all sorts of chicken jerky products, but at no point has there been conclusive evidence that shows a contaminant.  However, there have been tests carried out in the past couple months designed to look for heavy metals, and those results have not yet come in.

It’s my hope as a San Jose personal injury lawyer that everyone out there who has fed their dog these items makes sure that their pet remains healthy.  As a personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles, I would hate to see a defective product hurt man’s best friend.

Recall: Advanced Animal Nutrition Dry Dog Food

By Los Angeles Personal Injury Lawyer on December 14, 2011

According to news sources, a voluntary recall has been issued for Dog Power Dog Food after it was discovered that the product contained high levels of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring mold-by product that can potentially cause illness to pets that consume the product.

The company, Advanced Animal Nutrition, announced the voluntary recall due to levels of aflatoxin in the product exceeding standard limits. The recalled products have lot numbers K0004 through K1322 and include Dog Power Adult Maintenance Formula, Dog Power Hunters Formula, and Dog Power Hi-Pro Performance Formula. The recalled dried dog food was manufactured between January. 4, 2011 through November. 18, 2011.

There have been no illnesses reported.

Consumers with the recalled product should take it away from pets immediately and return it to the point of purchase for a full refund. For additional information contact the company at 866-648-7646.

As a Los Angeles personal injury attorney, I’ve seen recalls of this kind in the past and know the severity of the hazards they entail. I hope this information can help raise awareness about this recalled product. If you or a loved one has been injured through the use of a defective product, speak with a Los Angeles product liability lawyer to learn about the legal options available to you.
