The Food and Drug Administration continues to expand its efforts to make sure that food is safe both at home and abroad.
To that end, the organization has announced June 19 as the date of a Washington D.C. meeting called International Capacity Building with Respect to Food Safety. Persons involved in the daylong meeting will be able to offer their comments and opinions on how this portion of the Food Safety Modernization Act. The FDA is hoping that the forum can be used to get ideas on how to improve regulatory, scientific, and technical policy so as to make products safer in those countries that export food to the United States.
Right now, the plan calls for six different elements that must all be addressed in some capacity, hence the need for the meeting. First, it must be decided what sorts of agreements and stipulations must be made between nations to ensure that food safety standards are met. Then, there must be a way for countries to safely share computer data. Inspection reports must be recognized on both sides, and government officials and food producers must be trained on food production and handling procedures.
In addition, countries will have to accept cross-border testing techniques so as to ensure what passes muster in one country would do so in another. Requirements will also need to be standard under what is known as the Codex Alimentarius.
According to news sources, the Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to take certain weight-loss products known as HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, otherwise marketed as “homeopathic”. The FDA has reportedly already issued warning letters to seven companies selling the illegal drugs since they make unsupported medical claims that are not approved by the FDA.
The FDA also claims that the there is no evidence to support the claims that HCG increases weight-lost in any way, while criticizing the potentially dangerous diets that the companies selling the product advocate.
hese diet restrictions typically advocated with the products limit the intake of daily calories to about 500 per day. Therefore any resulting weight lose could be attributed to the excessively restrictive diets, and not the actual effects of the drugs, the FDA says.
The FDA is advising consumers with the products to stop taking them immediately, not to follow their diet instructions and to contact the FDA at 800-FDA-1088 to report any adverse health effects that may arise from taking the product.

There was a FDA warning issued a few weeks back that warned consumers of the danger of eating too much of the licorice candy. More news sources just now surfaced talking about the properties that are present in the Halloween candy that allegedly may lead to dropping levels of potassium. Such condition may cause arrhythmia in people older than 40 and even to an irregular heart rhythm.
Although FDA officials say that it takes a large amount of licorice consumption to make it a threat to your health, they warn that candy lovers must watch out so this passion for the confectionery won’t hurt them in any way.
