According to news sources, a recall has been issued for Honeycrisp Apple Cider after it was discovered that the recalled product contained elevated levels of a natural byproduct of several mold species called patulin.
The recall was announced by the company, Pepin Heights Orchards, after routine sample tests of the recalled product indicated the existence of elevated patulin levels. The recall affects only batches of the product with a Use By date of 02/09/12. Although the short-term effects of patulin have yet to be fully established, the Food and Drug Administration does consider it to be of long-term health concern.
Consumers with the recalled product can return the product label by mail to Pepin Heights Orchards, Attn: Cider Refund, 1753 South Hwy 61, Lake City, MN 55041 for a refund.
There have been no illnesses reported to date.
