The Food and Drug Administration is concerned about certain birth control pills increasing the patient’s risk of blood clots, according to recent news sources.
The birth control pills being observed contain the hormone drospirenone and include:
- Safyral
- Syeda
- Ocella
- Yasmin
- Zarah
- Beyaz
- Gianvi
- Loryna
- Yaz
- Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol
A review by the FDA of two studies conducted in 2011 found that those using pills containing the hormone were two to three times more at risk of venous thromboembolism events (VTE) than women who used a pill containing the hormone levonorgestrel.
VTE is a condition in which a blood clot forms within a vein, typically the thigh or lower leg. It can potentially block and artery, causing pulmonary embolism, which can be life-threatening.
The FDA is continuing to review studies of the hormones.
