CPSC to Revise Table Saw Regulations

By Los Angeles Personal Injury Lawyer on October 21, 2011

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has voted to publish a notice of proposed rulemaking in regards to table saws and their safety standards.

According to recent news sources, it’s estimated that consumers’ injuries number at about 67,300 in relation to serious hand and finger injuries resulting from table saw use. The cost for these injuries is about $2.36 billion annually. Those numbers are based on reports from 2007 and 2008. Daily, CPSC estimates that 8 avulsions, 11 fractures, and 11 amputations occur from table saws.

After the Commission publishes the proposed safety improvements, the public has 60 days to comment.

As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I know that these improvements will help cut back on injuries enormously. While I’m aware that it may make the cost of a table saw go up, I’m also aware that product–related injuries cost about $900 billion annually. In my experience as a product liability lawyer, I think safety is of the utmost important when it comes to products like the table saw. If you or someone you know has been injured by a faulty product, it’s in your best interest to talk to a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible to discuss the legal options available to you and your loved ones.

Table Saw Safety: To Have or To Have Not

Table saw safety is an issue in this country, with nearly 3,500 people in the United States losing a digit or worse to one every year, according to recent news sources.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is trying to implement new rules and regulations so that table saw could be made more safe for the consumers.

Several years ago, a safety brake was invented call SawStop, which senses when the blade comes in contact with skin and shuts down. within three-one-thousandths of a second. However, the SawStop would add an additional $100 to the price of a table saw, which is almost double the price of lower-end saws.
The government is currently in debate over whether the free market should be in charge of the issue or if this requires federal mandates.

As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I know that $100 is a small price to pay for the health and safety of consumers. However, I understand that the price would fall on the consumers and it’s not something everyone would choose. In my experience as a personal injury lawyer, hindsight usually proves to be 20/20, and I can be those who have been injured by table saws wish that safety features were required.
