Autumn Jogging Safety Tips

By Los Angeles Personal Injury Lawyer on September 26, 2011

Running outside during the fall months can be a fun and healthy activity. The cooler weather is preferable to the blistering heat, and running outside can be refreshing after spending your summer months in the same air conditioned gym. However, the fall season does mean that there is less daylight to run in, and joggers often practice poor safety habits.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 4,378 pedestrians were killed by cars from 2004-2006. Another 69,000 sustained injuries. Consider these tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration if you are out jogging this season:

  • Pedestrians should remain aware at intersections, where drivers may not yield the right-of-way to pedestrians while turning onto another street.
  • Pedestrians should increase their visibility at night by carrying a flashlight when walking and by wearing retro-reflective clothing.
  • Whenever possible, joggers should use a marked crosswalk.

As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I have seen many pedestrian accidents that are often devastating to victims and their loved ones. I recommend wearing light clothing and possibly getting a light, such as the detachable ones that cyclists use, if you are running in the early morning or late at night. My experience as a Los Angeles car accident lawyer has shown me that remaining aware can make a huge difference in your safety. I hope that you follow these tips to stay safe and healthy.
