Giant Eagle has announced a recall of their shredded iceberg lettuce due to fears of a listeria contamination, according to recent news sources.
The packages are 8 ounces and have a sell by date of October 14, 2011. The contamination was discovered by the Food and Drug Administration in a routine sampling test. The lettuce was produced in Salinas, California by River Ranch Fresh Foods LLC and has a product code of 3003430195.
No illnesses in relation to this recall have been reported thus far.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria which can cause a serious infection in some people that can be life-threatening. Especially at risk are the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
