Nordica USA has agreed to pay a settlement to the Consumer Product Safety Commission of $214,000 after allegedly failing to report a safety defect with one of their products, according to news reports.
The defect over which the settlement is being made is a safety defect with the “XBi ALU Skis” binding plates, which the CPSC alleges that Nordica failed to report.
Nordica USA discovered they had 200 warranty claims about the binding plates breaking in the Fall of 2008, which could cause users to lose control and fall. A recall was issued in February of 2009 for 4,500 skis. The skis were sold through ski retailers for between $800 and $1,000 from August 2006 through December 2008.
Federal law requires that manufacturers report defects within 24 hours after being aware of a defect. Nordica denies CPSC’s claim that they knowingly failed to report a defect.
