Nutrition Experts Hold Safety Summit

Current safety issues in preparation and supply of PN (Parenteral Nutrition), commonly known as IV (intravenous nutrition), has brought leaders from many big organizations together to take part in safety summit of PN, according to news reports. The leaders that participated in the summit agreed to different ideas that will be helpful in improving the PN safety and patient care.

This event was hosted by A.S.P.E.N. (American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition) and there were many representatives from different institutes, departments and organizations, such as Institute of Safe Medication Practices, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, National Home Infusion, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and many others. This summit served as a good platform that allowed the practitioners to talk and discuss about the safety issues that were faced during parenteral nutrition.

According to one expert, ” many circumstances and incidents have threatened the safety of parenteral nutrition as an important therapy. This is why A.S.P.E.N. convened the PN Safety Summit. We brought together key leaders to discuss the issues and to develop recommendations and action items that will help make this therapy safer. The outcomes will provide a blueprint for caregivers and will greatly benefit the patients receiving this life-sustaining therapy.”

As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I’m glad to see that safety of patients is being considered and continually improved. In my experience as a product defect lawyer, I know that medicine and medical practices that are not properly administered can have deadly effects.
