Publix Supermarkets has recalled their packaged spinach dip due to findings that it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to news sources.
Routine testing conducted by the company revealed the bacteria was present in some containers. The products affected have an expiration date of October 2010 and a UPC code of 41415-00062. The product comes in 16-ounce containers.
The recalled product was distributed in Florida.
Listeriosis is a serious illness that can cause life-threatening reactions in some people. Those especially at risk are young children, the elderly, pregnant women and their unborn child, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals usually experience fever, headache, nausea, stiffness, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The bacteria recently caused an outbreak of illness in several states when it contaminated a lot of cantaloupes. Eight people have died in that instance.
