World Wide Fish Products Inc. has announced a recall of their Smoked Split Herring because the product was found to be uneviscerated during a routine inspection, according to news sources.
The product was sold on August 17, 2011 to Food Plaza Market, NSA Supermarket (Bravo), P&P Distributers, Brooklyn #1 Meat Market, and Flaming Meat Distributors, all in New York City.
The New York State Agriculture and Markets Food Inspector found that the product was uneviscerated during a routine inspection. New York State Food Laborator Personnel confirmed the finding.
Evisceration, the process of disemboweling, is required by New York State Agriculture and Markets Regulations before fish can be sold because clostridium botulinum spores occur most frequently in that area.
The company has not yet received any reports of illnesses.
Consumers are advised to return the product to their store of purchase for a full refund.
