Over a quarter of a million eggs (approximately 288,000) are being recalled by the leading egg distributor and seller in the United States, Cal-Maine Foods, due to concerns of Salmonella enteritidis contamination. The Los Angeles Times reports that the eggs were bought from Ohio Fresh eggs and were distributed to food wholesalers and retailers in eight states: California, Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
Cal-Maine Foods was reportedly informed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that a routine sample test came back positive for salmonella from the Ohio-based egg supplier. No known illnesses have been reported; however, there is growing concern by consumers regarding the safety of eggs after two earlier major salmonella egg recalls that occurred during the summer. There were 1,953 cases of Salmonella reported from May 1 to July 31. Some have noted that the recent egg recall is a sign that new FDA rules monitoring egg safety are playing an effective role.
The potentially tainted eggs included in Cal-Maine Foods’ recall were packaged under the following four brands: James Farm, Springfield Grocer, Sunny Meadow and Sun Valley. Consumers who have purchased these brands have been advised to check for plant number 1457; packing “Julian” dates of 282, 284 or 285; and a “sell by” or “expiration date” of 11/07/10, 11/09/10 or 11/24/10.
Consumers should be aware that some of the most common symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, chills, muscle pains, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms typically manifest 12 to 72 hours after ingestion of the tainted food product. Salmonella poisoning can affect an individual for four to seven days and poses the most serious health risks to people with weak immune systems, the elderly, and infants.
